Pregnancy, as well as the process of childbirth, is considered a beautiful phase of a woman's life. However, the dangers that come with pregnancy are also very high. Women's reproductive health must be given importance, especially since the pregnancy-related deaths in the United States has been steadily increasing over the years, according to the CDC . Sometimes it so happens that the mother's life is threatened by the baby and a really tough call needs to be made in that situation. A call that will save at least one of their lives, in a worst-case scenario. When this Reddit user was faced with a similar situation, the people who were supposed to be there for her, turned their backs on her.
The woman took to Reddit's AITA subreddit to see if she was in the wrong for deciding to save herself over her newborn child. In the post that has since been removed, the 27-year-old woman wrote that she was off birth control and her 28-year-old husband used condoms instead since they were not keen on having children. She then wrote, After confirming that I was pregnant (took a pregnancy test after days of morning sickness), we decided to keep the baby, as we both have stable incomes and a house that has a few extra rooms.
I was due to give birth a few weeks ago after a pretty okay pregnancy (not extremely good or anything, but not as bad as some women), she stated. My husband was the only one in the room with me due to hospital restrictions, but we were excited and nervous about the birth of our first child. (We were having a baby boy!) Unfortunately, during the delivery, there were some unexpected complications. It came down to either the woman's life or that of her baby's, I, terrified for my life, told the nurses to fix the complication first (it's very rare) and then try to save the baby. She underwent an emergency surgery during which she lost her baby.
At the moment, my husband and I were both okay with my decision and grateful that I survived, but upset over the loss of our child, she wrote. When they returned home and broke the news to their families, the woman's family was kind and understanding and even helped the couple in their grieving process. But his parents were furious, she said. They said that I was a horrible woman and was a terrible mother for letting my child die. His mother specifically said that she would give her life for her children and that I was a selfish, cold-hearted b****. This took a toll on the woman's mental health and she started feeling lonely, especially after her husband turned on her as well.
Reddit user TrekA51 stated, You are so NTA! Honestly, I am so sorry you had to go through this and I am sorry for your loss. But choosing to save your own life is in no way a bad choice. And if your husband would rather you had died giving birth, I think you should seriously reconsider your marriage. Another user wrote , This just shows that the husband and his family don't see her as a person with her own worth as such, to them she is just a dispensable baby-making machine. The husband just showed his priorities. He values his baby more than his wife and their ability to make a new one. Redditors assured the woman that she was not the jerk here and that she deserves a better, more respectful husband.
